So, I got this thing for the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, you know, the one with the see-through back. I’ve been wanting to mess around with it, see how it works, maybe even take it apart a bit.
First off, I grabbed the watch. I wanted to look at the back first, so I took off the straps – they were held on by these tiny little spring bars. I put those aside so I wouldn’t lose them.
Then, I took a closer look at the back of the watch. It’s got this cool glass part where you can see all the gears and stuff moving around. That’s the “open case back” part. There are also some words and numbers on it, but I didn’t really pay attention to those. I heard it is called the calibre 1863. I don’t know what that means.
I wanted to see how the timer works. There are two buttons on the side, at the 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock positions. I pressed the top one, and the big second hand started moving. That was pretty neat. I pressed it again, and it stopped. Then I pressed the bottom button, and all the hands went back to zero. That’s the chronograph function, I guess.
Next, I wanted to try and open the back. I used this little tool I have, it’s got three prongs that fit into the notches on the back of the watch. I held the watch in my left hand and the tool in my right. I lined up the prongs with the notches and turned. It was a little tricky, but I got it to move.
- Step 1: Remove the straps.
- Step 2: Examine the open case back.
- Step 3: Test the chronograph function.
- Step 4: Use the tool to open the case back.
I didn’t take the whole back off, just loosened it a bit. I could see the gears turning even better now. I was a little worried about messing something up, so I didn’t go any further.
This watch is pretty cool. I can see why people like them so much. I guess they are kind of expensive, and some of the older ones are worth even more money. It is 42mm. I don’t know it is big or small.
Anyway, that was my little adventure with the OMEGA Speedmaster. Maybe next time I’ll try taking it apart even more. Or maybe not, I don’t want to break it!
