So, I got this wild idea the other day. I was scrolling through pictures of fancy watches, you know, just daydreaming, and I stumbled upon this beauty – the Patek Philippe Gondolo 7042/100R-010. Man, this thing is gorgeous! It’s all rose gold, covered in diamonds, just dripping with luxury. I thought to myself, “Could I possibly remake something like this?”
I started by doing some digging. I found out this watch is a big deal. It’s called the Gondolo Haute Joaillerie, which sounds super important, right? It’s got a 31mm by 34.8mm case, and it’s packed with 251 diamonds, all arranged in this cool circular pattern. Plus there is some baguette diamonds along the bezel and lugs. The movement inside is a Caliber 215, which is manually wound. Apparently, Patek Philippe is a pretty exclusive brand, owned by the Stern family since like, forever ago, or maybe 1932 to be more precise. And the current boss is some guy named Thierry Stern.
Armed with this info, I got to work. First, I needed to find materials that looked the part. I couldn’t exactly use real rose gold and diamonds, obviously. My budget isn’t quite there yet! But I found some decent substitutes. I got some rose gold-colored metal for the case and some shiny crystals that kind of look like diamonds if you don’t squint too hard.
- Sourcing the “Rose Gold” and “Diamonds”: This was a bit of a treasure hunt. I hit up a bunch of craft stores and online shops. I ended up finding this metal that had a pretty good rose gold color. And for the “diamonds,” I got a whole bunch of tiny, sparkly crystals.
- Shaping the Case: This was tricky. I used some tools to carefully shape the metal into a rectangle, trying to match the size of the Gondolo. It wasn’t perfect, but it started to resemble a watch case.
- Sticking on the “Diamonds”: Okay, this was tedious. I used a strong adhesive to stick each tiny crystal onto the case, following that circular pattern I saw in the pictures. I definitely got some glue on my fingers, but it was worth it.
- The Movement: Now, I’m no watchmaker, so I couldn’t make a real working movement. Instead, I found a cheap quartz movement online and fitted it inside the case. It’s not a Caliber 215, but it ticks!
- Finishing Touches: I added a simple strap and a dial with some basic hands. It’s not an exact replica, but it definitely captures the spirit of the Gondolo.
The Result
It took a while, but I finally had my own version of the Patek Philippe Gondolo. It’s not perfect, and it’s definitely not worth anything close to the real thing. But, I made it myself, and that’s pretty cool. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about watches and how they’re put together. Plus, I have a shiny new watch to show off, even if it’s just a homemade version of a super expensive one. It looks pretty nice though, right?
