Well, ain’t this somethin’. Audemars Piguet, they say. Fancy name, ain’t it? Sounds like somethin’ a rich fella would wear. Never had one myself, couldn’t afford it if I tried. But folks talk, you know? Hear things here and there.
Heard tell these watches, they ain’t cheap. Lordy, no. They say you gotta work a long time, save up a whole heap of money to get one. Talkin’ thousands, maybe tens of thousands! For a watch? Makes a body wonder what’s so special. Must tell time real good, I reckon. But I got my ol’ clock on the wall, tells time just fine. Ain’t fancy, but it works.
People on this… what’s it called… Reddit? They yap about these watches all the time. Say you can get ’em cheaper in some places. Hong Kong, they mention. Far away place, that is. Don’t know nothin’ ’bout it. But they say it’s cheaper there. Maybe folks there got more money, who knows?
Then they talk about payin’ monthly. Like gettin’ a car or somethin’. Never heard of payin’ for a watch a little bit at a time. Guess that’s how the fancy folks do it. Don’t seem right to me, though. If you can’t pay for it all at once, maybe you shouldn’t be buyin’ it. That’s what my mama always said.
They got different kinds, too. Royal Oak, they call it. Sounds like a tree, don’t it? And some other one, Code 11.59. Numbers and letters, confusing. Why can’t they just call it a watch? Makes no sense to me.

- Only make a few, that’s why they cost so much.
- People want ’em bad.
But I don’t see the fuss. It’s a watch. Tells time. Like any other watch. Maybe it’s got shiny things on it, I dunno. Maybe it makes you feel special wearin’ it. Folks are funny like that, always wantin’ what they can’t have.
Heard tell these watchmakers, they make a lot of money. Workin’ hard, I guess. Makin’ all them tiny parts, puttin’ ’em together just right. Takes skill, they say. More skill than I got, that’s for sure.
Some fella said he can’t afford a new one, wants to buy a used one. Makes sense to me. Why pay all that money for somethin’ new when you can get somethin’ just as good for less? That’s how we did things back home. Hand-me-downs, fixin’ things up instead of buyin’ new.
But these fancy folks, they want the newest, the best. Gotta have it first. Gotta show off. I don’t understand it, but that’s their business. Me, I’ll stick with my ol’ clock. It ain’t fancy, but it works. And that’s good enough for me.
So that’s what I know about them Audemars Piglet watches. Or whatever they’re called. Fancy watches for fancy folks. And I’m just a plain ol’ person. Don’t need no fancy watch to tell me what time it is.
