Okay, so, I got into this whole watch thing a while back, and let me tell you, it’s a rabbit hole. I was browsing, looking at all sorts of fancy timepieces, and I stumbled upon this beauty: the Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire. Man, that’s a mouthful, right? But the watch itself? Stunning. Classic style, very clean. I decided I had to get one.
First, I did some digging. I mean, you don’t just drop cash on something like this without knowing what you’re getting into. The general advice that I found was “check the dial, the hands, the movement” that seemed simple enough.
I started looking around online, but all of the new ones, it is way out of my price range. Then an opportunity came to me. I found a guy, a private seller, online who was selling a pre-owned one. It looked legit in the pictures, and the price was decent. I thought, “This is it!”
But hold on. I remembered some horror stories about buying watches online from random sellers. You gotta be careful, I thought. I needed to do some checking. I had to do my “due diligence” as the fancy folks say.
I hit up some watch forums, asked around, and a few people mentioned a place called “Matheu’s Fine Watches & Jewelry.” Apparently, they have these “certified Jaeger-LeCoultre skilled watchmakers” and all the “genuine Jaeger-LeCoultre spare parts, tools, and know-how.” Sounds legit, right? I figured these guys would know what’s what.
Then another guy showed me that there was a local auction house with a vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre up for grabs. It looked cool, but the Duomètre was what I really wanted. It felt like a sign, though.

- I asked for more pictures, close-ups of everything.
- I even asked about its service history. Better safe than sorry, you know?
Then, I hit up Matheu’s. I figured I’d see if they could authenticate the watch if I bought it. They said they could. Bingo! They seemed to know their stuff, which made me feel a lot better.
Now, I know some people warned me about eBay and watches. I did see a Reverso there, but I had my sights set on the Duomètre. Also, I just didn’t trust eBay for something like this. This is too big of a purchase to risk on a shady deal.
The Decision
After all that back and forth, all that research, I finally pulled the trigger. I bought the pre-owned Duomètre from the private seller. It was a bit of a gamble, but I felt pretty good about it. I did my homework, got the watch checked out by Matheu’s, and it all checked out. It was the real deal!
Man, holding that watch in my hands for the first time… that was something else. It’s even more beautiful in person. It was totally worth all the hassle. Now, I’ve got this amazing timepiece, and I learned a ton along the way. Not a bad outcome, if I do say so myself.
